Another great offseason promo: snowball

Here's another idea for a great offseason promo, this time from our northern neighbors, the St. Paul Saints.

Last year's Crispin Iceball Adventure Series was such a success the St. Paul Saints (independent; American Association) are bringing it back on January 30, 2010.

This unique ballgame played in the cold and possibly the snow of a January afternoon in St. Paul brings together many different components. First, it’s a one-of-a-kind sporting event played on the field at Midway Stadium under the normal rules of baseball. Second, and most importantly, it brings a charitable cause to the forefront with the Saints, Crispin Hard Apple Cider and media partners partnering to provide food and money for Second Harvest Heartland, a cause that can warm the heart of many including St. Crispin himself. Finally, this event will now be a part of one of the most famous winter activities in the Twin Cities area, the (St. Paul) Winter Carnival.

For the inaugural event last February, over 1,000 people braved temperatures in the teens and readings near zero to tailgate, enjoy live music, cooking demonstrations and an eventful game while raising nearly $20,000 for Second Harvest Heartland. Half of that $20,000 came from a generous donation of $10,000 from Lunds and Byerly’s who matched every dollar raised up to the $10,000 mark. This is the equivalent of $90,000 in food for the hungry. The event is designed to show that: Sometimes giving back is a worthy adventure in itself.

The afternoon is free of charge and proceeds from Saints food vendors will be donated to Second Harvest Heartland. Fans are encouraged to donate cash, food and warm clothing.

Second Harvest Heartland is the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization, with a mission of ending hunger through community partnerships. 41 million pounds of grocery products were distributed last year to hungry seniors, families and children through more than 1,000 non-profit member agencies and programs, including food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers, faith-based organizations and children’s after-school programs serving 59 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. For each $1 donated, Second Harvest Heartland can distribute more than $9 worth of grocery products for those in need. For further information on the non-profit, visit 2harvest.org or call 651.484.5117.
