Are Bluefish headed to Loudoun County?

In an announcement about Loudoun County investors snaring an independent Atlantic League franchise for 2011, it was reported the group was buying an existing team already owned by league founder Frank Boulton and investor Tony Rosenthal. Unless the pair have a defunct franchise in their hip pocket — always a possibility — the likeliest team for relocation is the Bridgeport Bluefish. UPDATE: Probably not. We have the inside scoop.

The announcement comes at a good time for Virginia Investment Partners: last night there was a public hearing on the Kincora development, which would be anchored by a 5,500-seat ballpark, while Loudoun County Supervisors are expected to vote on approval of the 400-acre mixed use development on June 16. Past attempts for project approval have failed; organizers think this latest effort (which calls for no public assistance for the ballpark) will have a very good shot at passage.

We suspect the Bluefish may be the team slated for a move — if there is a move. A plan for a renovation of Richmond's Diamond would add another team to the circuit, which could mean two new teams, as opposed to an existing franchise shift, for 2010 and 2011. So Bridgeport fans shouldn't get too nervous — yet.

UPDATE: We were right to suspect a current team moving. Boulton and Rosenthal control the old Atlantic City franchise in the league; this is the franchise that is eyed for Loudoun County, according to an Atlantic League insider.
