There are a lot of worthy organizations putting in youth baseball fields these days, but the plan by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation caught our eye because of the Memorial Stadium connection. The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation is raising money to build three to five ballfields for disadvantaged youth in Baltimore, and one of the proposed fields will be at the old Memorial Stadium site, using the ballpark’s old home plate.
Memorial Stadium was the home of the Baltimore Orioles after the team’s move from St. Louis in 1954 to the opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The Memorial Stadium replica will cost $1.5 million. The foundation, established by Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. in 2001, is raising funds for the project.
