“New” Toros open spring training

The Tucson Toros — one of the best marks ever in the minors — return to Hi Corbett Field under the auspices of the independent Golden Baseball League.Nostalgia will rule in Tucson once the Tucson Toros once again take the diamond at Hi Corbett Field, this time as a member of the independent Golden Baseball League.

Those with long memories will remember the original Tucson Toros of the Pacific Coast League; the team originally played at Hi Corbett Field before Tucson Electric Park opened. Hi Corbett is one of the grand old facilities of spring training, and even though it’s not quite the same place it once was — the adobe outfield wall is gone, for instance — it’s still a great place to watch a baseball game.

Which is what Jay Zucker, the owner of the Toros, is hoping; he owned the PCL franchise before selling it to an ownership group that moved the Sidewinders to Reno. The team is playing a pair of free exhibition games this weekend.
