Bears receive grant to study new ballpark

The Yakima Bears (short season; Northwest League) received a $40,000 grant from Yakima County to study the team’s economic options for a new or renovated ballpark, but it sure sounds like team ownership is set on a new facility.

The funds are coming from the Yakima County Supporting Investments in Economic Diversification board. Those monies are generated by a local share of the state sales tax. And although the county is funding the study, it’s not likely to fund the new or renovated ballpark, so the study will make some recommendations about how to pay for the facility.

Yakima County Stadium isn’t that old: it opened in 1993 and seats 3,000 or so.
