Malliet-led group breaks ground on new Normal ballpark

A new ballpark in Normal, Ill., is scheduled to open for the 2010 season.

A groundbreaking was held yesterday at Heartland Community College for a new ballpark housing an independent Fronter League team and the school’s baseball squad. Designed by Kansas City’s Pendulum Studio, the new $12 million ballpark is being built with private funds raised by a group led by River City Rascals owner Steve Malliet.

The new ballpark, which will sport artificial turf, is expected to open in time for the 2010 season. We’ve heard it will have some unique features, including the return of one of the most unique ballpark touches we’ve seen over the years.
