Yankees hold open house to push spendy seats at new ballpark

The New York Yankees held an open house Saturday to push the priciest seats — between $350 and $2,500 per game — at the new Yankee Stadium.

While the new ballpark was universally praised by those touring it, the reaction was less enthusiastic about spending $350 million or more per game to sit between the dugouts. Indeed, the open house might have backfired and showed how poorly the Yankees are doing at selling the most expensive seats in the house, after displacing long-time season-ticket holders from their old seat locations.

"If they had sold all the seats, they wouldn’t have this open house. I’m certain they thought they were going to sell all their seats," Mike Galati told Newsday. "They’re selling not only a new stadium, they’re selling the Yankee name, so that carries a lot of weight, but these are tough times right now. It’s a big decision to weigh: tens of thousands of dollars on a seat for a baseball game when you can watch the same game on your living room couch."
