Obstructed-view seats make comeback at new Yankee Stadium

Old-timers will feel a flush of nostalgia after finding out their $12 seats have a poor view of the playing field. Don’t worry, say Yankees officials; we’ll hang a TV or two out there.
Old-timers will feel a flush of nostalgia after finding out their $12 seats have a poor view of the playing field. Don’t worry, say Yankees officials; we’ll hang a TV or two out there.

The original Yankee Stadium was built before the days of cantilevered decks, so obstructed views were pretty common. The mid-1970s rebuilding of the place took out many of those pillars, giving fans better views of the field.

But obstructed-view seats will be present at the new Yankee Stadium, according to team officials. This time the view of the field won’t be obstructed by columns; they’ll be obstructed by a sports bar in center field. Specifically, fans in in the last twos of bleacher sections 201 and 239 — on either side of the sports bar — will have their views of the opposite field cut off.

The solution, say the Yankees, is the construction of TVs in the area so fans can see in replays what they missed on the field.

UPDATE: Apparently these seats will be worse than anticipated: the Yankees are dropping the face value to $5.
