The State College Spikes made several announcements surrounding the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, which will take place on Tuesday, August 18 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The announcements were made as part of the club’s annual SpikesFest event at the Penn State Multi-Sport Facility.

Highlighting the announcements is the club’s unique “Going Green” theme which will be prevalent not only as part of the All-Star Game festivities, but throughout the entire 2009 season. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was the first LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Certified ballpark in the United States when it was completed in the spring of 2006, thus sparking the team’s use of that theme as part of the 2009 NYPL All-Star Game. The Spikes will announce special “Going Green” details as the game draws closer, but the theme will be included in the look and feel of the ballpark, as part of specific fan promotions, and in the day-of-game operations of the ballpark.

“Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was the first environmental and energy-friendly ballpark built in the country so naturally we felt that our hosting of the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Game was the perfect stage for this concept to take center stage,” said Spikes General Manager Jason Dambach. “We already have a long list of ideas to incorporate as part of the theme and will continue to brainstorm and implement ‘green’ themes and promotions for the event with the end goal of educating all of our fans and visitors about the importance of the green movement.”

The logo for the 2009 NYPL All-Star Game was also unveiled Sunday and the “green” theme is evident in the design of the logo, which fans can see at StateCollegeSpikes.com. The All-Star Game logo will be visible throughout the ballpark leading up the August 18 event as well as on new merchandise which will be available at “Off the Rack Outfitters” at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park and on-line at StateCollegeSpikes.com.

The Spikes also announced that the NYPL All-Star Game will not just be contained to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. All-Star Week festivities will begin on Sunday, August 16 with a yet-to-be-announced community event. In addition, the club will hold an All-Star Gala event on Monday, August 17. Day-of-game activities at the ballpark will include free fan autograph sessions with All-Star players, the opportunity for fans to enjoy infield and batting practice and a celebrity home run derby. Complete All-Star Week details are currently being finalized and will be announced in the coming weeks.
