Uninformed sports writers agree: Las Vegas could support MLB

With the annual Winter Meetings held this year in Las Vegas, the local paper brings up the issue of whether Sin City could support Major League Baseball and finds a bunch of sportswriters — who are better at writing about player moves than the financials of baseball — who think it would be a nifty move to move a team to Vegas.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal finds reporters like the Boston Globe’s Nick Carfado, who says MLB could work in Las Vegas because it’s a popular spot to live for many players. Luckily, there are also reporters like the Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers, who admits he has no idea whether the market could support MLB.

Las Vegas has popped up twice in recent years as a potential destination for MLB, first when the Montreal Expos were shopped around and then again when Jeffrey Loria was working on funding for a new Florida Marlins ballpark and started mentioning potential new homes for the team. We’re not so sure Las Vegas is truly a strong contender for any major-league team: the size of the market is problematic, and there doesn’t seem to be the corporate base needed to make MLB work these days.
