Downtown ballpark study underway in Birmingham

Conventions Sports & Leisure will commence with the $40,000 study of the potential surrounding a new downtown ballpark for the Birmingham Barons.

Conventions Sports & Leisure will commence with a $40,000 study of the potential surrounding a new downtown ballpark for the Birmingham Barons (Class AA; Southern League).

The team has played at Regions Park in Hoover since 1988; before that the team played at historic Rickwood Field. Their lease at Regions Park expires at the end of the season, though the lease calls for an optional five-year extension.

Funding for the plan was finalized last week after private sources stepped up with donations.

A location of sorts has already been identified: at First Avenue South and 14th Street South, near Railroad Park.
