The summer-collegiate Great West League is suspending operations for the 2019 season, with existing teams looking to join another league or play an independent schedule.
The announcement was made by Great West League Commissioner Ken Wilson, on behalf of the league Board of Directors. The six teams playing in 2018: Chico Heat, Klamath Falls Gems, Lincoln Potters, Yuba Sutter Gold Sox, Medford Rogues and the San Francisco Seals. Both Medford and Klamath Falls are former members of the West Coast League.
“This was not an easy decision, but after deep consideration, evaluation and introspection, we have elected to suspend operations for the upcoming season,” said Wilson of the circuit, which began play in 2016.
Presumably some of the teams will make a move to join the rival West Coast League, which operated with 12 teams in 2018.
“While it is unfortunate that the Great West League will not return in 2019, we are extremely grateful to everyone who has invested their time, support, and made significant financial and emotional commitments to the league over the past three seasons,” Wilson said. “We are also grateful to the hundreds of outstanding student athletes and dedicated coaches who have competed in the league, many of whom have gone on to professional careers and completed their degrees.”
