Five finalists have been revealed for the name of an upcoming Rookie-level Pioneer League team in Colorado Springs, with fan voting now open.
Following the 2018 season, the current Helena Brewers (Rookie; Pioneer League) will relocate to Colorado Springs. They will take the place of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League), who are moving to San Antonio to replace the Missions (Class AA; Texas League) as they shift to a new ballpark in Amarillo. This is all part of a series of franchise relocations by the Elmore Sports Group.
It was announced last month that the Sky Sox moniker will not be adopted by the Brewers once they relocate to Colorado Springs, opening the door for a name-the-team contest. Five finalists have been revealed, with the full list below in alphabetical order:
Colorado Springs Happy Campers
The Happy Campers celebrates Colorado Springs’ positive attitude and our love of nature, camping and all things outdoors.
Colorado Springs Lamb Chops
The largest and highest quality lamb in the world, the Lamb Chops is a nod to the World Famous Colorado Lamb. We’ve got the chops!
Colorado Springs Punchy Pikas
A small but fierce critter that calls Pikes Peak home, known for its iconic forceful bark.
Colorado Springs Throttle Jockeys
Aim high! The Throttle Jockeys is a tribute to our brave pilots who train and call Colorado Springs home.
Rocky Mountain Oysters
It’s a classic Minor League Baseball name in the making, this original cowboy fare has already been made famous at Colorado fairs, festivals and baseball games.
“We were overwhelmed with the unique and incredible stories that were told by fans,” said Chris Phillips, General Manager of the Sky Sox. “This process has displayed the true passion that this community has for Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak region, and the state of Colorado. We’ve worked diligently to take all of your responses very seriously while still remaining fun and true to the spirit of Minor League Baseball. We believe these top five names encompass the personality of this community and region.”
Fans can access the voting page by going to the team’s website at SkySox.com and clicking on the “Fan Voting” graphic. The voting will run until August 1, giving fans two weeks to vote on their favorite team name.
The final judging of the winning team name will be based on originality, creativity, uniqueness, regional relevance, and appropriateness for audience. The fan whose submission leads to the team’s new name will receive the ultimate VIP Baseball Package – Four Season Tickets for the 2019 season, a personalized Team Jersey and an opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch during the 2019 season. The winning name will be revealed at a press conference this fall. All finalists will also be invited to the unveiling event.
