The Los Angeles Dodgers are planning to extend the protective netting at Dodger Stadium, with the installation set to be complete prior to the 2018 season.
The Dodgers have become the latest addition to the list of teams that will extend the protective netting at their ballpark prior to the 2018 season. More information about the project is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, but for now the Dodgers have at least confirmed their intentions. More from The Los Angeles Daily News:
“We will be expanding the netting at our games,” Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten confirmed Tuesday. “We have not yet decided on a configuration or materials but we hope to have an announcement before the start of spring training.”
This is one of the latest developments concerning extended netting at a Major League Baseball ballpark, as the Los Angeles Angels recently announced plans to extend netting to the ends of both dugouts at Angel Stadium.
Over the last several months–particularly in the period since a young girl was severely struck by a foul at Yankee Stadium in September–there has been a steady rise in the number of teams that are extending the netting at their ballparks. Among the other clubs that have announced plans to do so include the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers. In addition, extended netting has been announced for spring-training games at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, Steinbrenner Field, Hammond Stadium and LECOM Park.
