New for 2017: Willie Horton Field of Dreams, Presented by Meijer

New Detroit ballpark

The field that is being installed at the former site of Tiger Stadium has a new name, as it will be known as Willie Horton Field of Dreams, presented by Meijer. Meijer, a superstore chain, presented the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) with $750,000 on Thursday.

Detroit PAL has undertaken the initiative to convert the Tiger Stadium site into a multipurpose youth sports field. The name of the facility will honor Detroit Tigers great Willie Horton, while the $750,000 from Meijer will be applied to the project’s funding raising campaign.

Details of the contribution were unveiled on Thursday. More from The Detroit Free Press:

The Willie Horton Field of Dreams presented by Meijer will allow kids from Detroit and the surrounding communities to play diamond sports, football, soccer and more at the new headquarters and stadium at the site where Tiger Stadium used to stand.

“Detroit PAL is very excited to announce the Willie Horton Field of Dreams, presented by Meijer,” said Detroit PAL CEO Tim Richey. “Meijer’s commitment to youth sports is making a difference all over the Midwest and we are proud work with them to get kids playing at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.”

Along with the synthetic turf field, the project is also expected to include a new headquarters for Detroit PAL. Fundraising efforts to receive more than $15 million were launched in 2015. Willie Horton Field of Dreams, presented by Meijer is tentatively scheduled to open in September, according to The Detroit News.
