Now that Arlington voters have approved a new retractable-roof ballpark, the Texas Rangers are saying that the facility will open in 2020.
When the $1 billion proposal was introduced earlier this year, but the Rangers and Arlington officials said that the ballpark would open in 2020 or 2021. With 2021 likely being the most conservative estimate, Rangers executive vice president of business operations Rob Matwick says that the team is eying a 2020 opener.
In order to get there, the Rangers will first need to select a final design firm. (It’s worth noting that the rendering above, done by Populous, is preliminary.) Another major step would be to secure a general contractor by next spring, allowing ballpark construction to begin in the summer of 2017. More from the Dallas Morning News:
Construction is expected to begin by next summer.
“We are exchanging red lines with a master architectural firm so we can go full-bore on the design process,” Matwick said.
Red lines is an architectural term used to describe written comments on design concepts.
On Election Day, voters approved the new ballpark by a wide margin, as roughly 60% voted yes. The plan calls for a series of taxes used to construct the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium to be extended to pay for Arlington’s portion of the cost, along with a 10% parking tax and $3 ticket tax. The Rangers will be committed to the ballpark through 2053.
