Bismarck to Fans: Help Us Choose Team Name

Northwoods LeagueThe new summer-collegiate Northwoods League team playing out of a renovated Bismarck Municipal Stadium beginning in 2017 is asking fans to submit potential monikers in a name-the-team contest.

Beginning today and running through June 26, the Northwoods League’s newest team is asking fans in the Bismarck, Mandan, and their surrounding communities to send in their favorite names for the new team.

Fans can submit their team name suggestions on Bismarck Baseball’s new website bismarckbaseballisback.com and can also double their chances to win prizes by liking Bismarck Baseball on Facebook or following them on Twitter and posting/tweeting their team name submission on the page and including the #NameYourTeam hashtag. You can read through the list of awards and contest rules at the website

“The team name contest is one of the most exciting parts of starting a new franchise and involving the fans in this decision really helps us choose a name that best represents the community,” said John Bollinger, the team’s General Manager. “Our name becomes our identity, it becomes our brand, it’s the logo on our jerseys. So it’s a big deal. And who knows the brand of our community better than our fans.”

Bismarck Municipal Stadium opened in 1921 and has served as home to pro and amateur baseball ever since. Most notably, the ballpark was a stop for Negro Leagues barnstorming teams, and Satchel Paige played there for extended periods when he felt Gus Greenlee was underpaying him; you can read that full story here.

One big question: what other city will be part of the league’s 2017 expansion? While there are some good candidates with good ballparks (like Jamestown’s historic Jack Brown Stadium), we hear from North Dakota folks that Minot‘s Corbett Field, a former MLB and indy league home, is a strong contender.
