Rangers to reassign Purpura

Texas RangersIn the wake of a disappointing season, the Texas Rangers are shaking up their front office and will reassign Tim Purpura, the team’s senior director of player development, to new duties for 2014.

The news was reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Purpura is well-known at almost every level of baseball. Besides serving as general manager of the Houston Astros (2005-07), Purpura spent four years as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Minor League Baseball, joining the Rangers front office in 2011.

The Rangers have been a disappointment this season; the team was expected to contend for a World Series but instead is scrambling to make the playoffs as a wild card. Tampa Bay is a game up on both Cleveland and the Rangers in the wild-card hunt. The Oakland Athletics have already clinched a 2013 divisional championship.
