New for 2013: Nogales Desert Ghosts

Nogales Desert Ghosts

We have a name for the newest team in the independent American West Baseball League: the Nogales (Az.) Desert Ghosts.

The team will play at War Memorial Stadium beginning this season, with former major league player Jolbert Cabrera (brother of Orlando Cabrera and son of scout Jolbert Cabrera) signed as manager.

The rather extensive ownership roster (close to 20) includes former major leaguers Ernesto FrieriDonovan Solano and Jhonatan Solano.

“We are very excited about our new partnership with the Nogales ownership group, and adding another financially stable team to the AWBL,” said league CEO Michael Cummings. “The partnership with the new ownership group shows the strength and stability of AWBL and gives players from the United States and South America an opportunity that they may not otherwise have.”

Currently the AWBL sits at four teams for 2013: the Desert Ghosts, North County Cannons, an unnamed Las Cruces team (playing at Apodaca Park, a former Pecos League home) and the Fullerton Flyers, which in the past was slated as a road team.
