A new lease with lowered rent has been approved by the city for the Joliet Slammers (independent; Frontier League), clearing the way for a new ownership group to buy the team from businessman Alan Oremus.
The deal, approved last night by the City Council, is along the lines set down earlier: it lowers the base rent at Silver Cross Field to $50,000 per year for 2013 and 2014 and increases it to $75,000 annually in 2015-2017. It also institutes a head surcharge should the Slammers exceed 95,000 fans next season.
With the new lease in hand, the same of the team to former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jim Haller, Twin Cities sports-law attorney Joshua Schaub, real-estate developer Tom Gump and other local investors is expected to close this week.
