New for 2012: Pittsfield Suns

Futures LeagueThe newest tenant of historic Wahconah Park: the Pittsfield Suns (summer collegiate; Futures League), as owner Goldklang Group has announced the team name and a GM hire, Jamie Keefe.

“In the baseball industry, the Goldklang Group has a reputation as a first-rate organization to work for, and more importantly learn from,” Keefe said. “I am honored the Goldklang Group has given me an opportunity in this wonderful baseball market, and I am excited to lead this organization in Pittsfield.” Keefe will be joined by Assistant General Manager Kevin McGuire and Director of Client Services Jackie Wendling for the Suns’ 2012 inaugural season. He knows the Pittsfield area: he was manager of the Pittsfield Colonials (independent; Can-Am League) in 2011.

“As a homeowner in the area for over thirty years, our family has had an eye on baseball in general, and Wahconah Park in particular for some time.  When the opportunity arose for us to place a club in Pittsfield we jumped at the chance,” said Jeff Goldklang, Suns owner and managing director for the group. “We intend to honor the tradition and history of the game in Pittsfield, while adding heavy doses of smiles and laughs.”

“We are excited to get this wonderful community involved,” said Tyler Tumminia, Suns co-owner and senior vice president of the group. “There’s a lot of history with baseball in Pittsfield, and we are eager to enhance that with our own brand of entertainment.  We have a different business model, highlighted by our signature and often times unconventional promotional initiatives…It’s an experience we are providing in addition to a ballgame.”

The Suns will play a total of 54 games throughout the months of June through August, 27 of which will be held at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Mass., a former home to independent and affiliated ball. The Suns will be operated under the Group’s Be Your Own Fan initiative, which focuses on a customized fan experience and family-affordable entertainment with a twist.
