The summer-collegiate Midwest Collegiate League announced a second expansion team for the 2012 season, as a new franchise will play at Lisle‘s Benedictine University.
The team will be owned by Windy City Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the league’s Rockford Foresters team in the MCL. The ballpark was home to the DuPage Dragons (summer collegiate; Prospect League), which ceased operations before the beginning of this season. This will mark the second expansion franchise granted for the 2012 season; Kankakee, ll., was announced earlier this week.
“The opportunity to play at a nationally recognized facility such as Benedictine University is tremendous for our League,” said league commissioner Don Popravak. “With over a million people living within DuPage County it offers us a great location and destination for our growth.”
“We are extremely excited to welcome the Midwest Collegiate League to the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex,” said Lou Simios, director of Sports Complex Operations at Benedictine. “The residents of Lisle in particular and DuPage County in general have long enjoyed watching high-quality, collegiate-level baseball at the Sports Complex, which is widely considered one of the top college athletic facilities in the Midwest if not the country. We anticipate they will enthusiastically embrace this new Midwest Collegiate League team.”
