Dennis Poppe, the NCAA vice president for football and baseball, says TD Ameritrade Park is working out well as the new home of the College World Series. Of course, what else is he gonna say?
His statements come at the first week of games at the new $131-million downtown Omaha ballpark. There have been a few glitches — a Texas home run was mistakenly ruled a double because of confusion over fencing on top of the home-run wall — but overall the building has worked as advertised. Plus, the NCAA managed to maintain the enthusiastic atmosphere surrounding the ballpark: at Rosenblatt Stadium, the actual game was just one part of the bigger picture, with tens of thousands of fans descending on Omaha for fun and festivities.
Attendance at this year’s CWS is pretty much the same as in previous years, but that’s to be expected: both ballparks have roughly the same capacity. We’ll be there for tomorrow night’s game.
