Schaumburg quietly invites leagues to pitch for Alexian Field lease

Schaumburg FlyersPreparing for the possibility that a sale of the Schaumburg Flyers (independent; North American League) may not close by tomorrow, Village of Schaumburg officials have invited reps from independent leagues to make pitches next week for the Alexian Field lease in 2011.

We’re told by sources close to the Village that the American Association and Frontier League have been invited, and we assume the North American League has been invited as well to make a case for why they should take over operations at Alexian Field. (No word on whether any summer-collegiate leagues have been invited.) The city is set on having a team in the ballpark for the 2011 season, and we’re told special emphasis in the decision-making process will be placed on fielding a team for this coming season.

Of course, the whole thing may be rendered moot if a sale of the team occurs between now and tomorrow, the date set by the Village and the Park Board for the Flyers to resolve their ownership situation. And, of course, a lot can happen between now and tomorrow. But what happens will surely have a domino effect affecting teams in Lake County, Schaumburg and maybe even Kalamazoo.
