This year’s Saints mascot anointed: Brat Favre

The name of this year's St. Paul Saints porcine mascot takes a cue from one of the biggest stories in Minnesota sports: Bret Favre joining the Minnesota Vikings.

The name of this year's St. Paul Saints (independent; American Association) porcine mascot, Brat Favre, takes a cue from one of the biggest stories in Minnesota sports: Bret Favre joining the Minnesota Vikings.

The Saints revealed the name at the World’s Largest Game of Catch Wednesday in downtown St. Paul. The name was selected out of over 200 entries in the Name the Pig Contest via the Saints website. The winning entry was submitted by Anne Aronson of Minneapolis, MN. She, along with her family, submitted five different names and that one stood out above all the rest. She will receive a prize pack from the Saints, along with being honored at a Saints game during the season-opening homestand May 13-19.

The similarities between the Minnesota Vikings quarterback and the 2010 swine made it difficult not to choose the name. After the record-breaking season that Brett Favre had in 2009, guiding the team to a near Super Bowl berth, and the outpouring of support for #4, the name was a logical choice. The Saints pig is loved by everyone in the country and looks to guide the 2010 Saints to their fifth championship. Brat Favre demonstrated his commitment to the club this spring, reporting to Saints training camp on time and in great shape for a month-old pig. All four of his ankles looked both strong and potentially delicious.

“We didn’t really care about the timing of when he joined the club,” said Saints Manager George Tsamis. “All we care about is that he’s there on opening night delivering baseballs with precision at the levels that only he can reach. I don’t know if it’s his youthful exuberance or what he ate for lunch, but he has that confidence which makes him a true leader. If he needs some help, I’m ready to call on Pigney Rice, Bernard Boarian and Percy Carvin’ to step up their games.”

While Brat Favre was the winning entry there were other names considered: Dr. Kaporkian, Swine Sungaard, Apollo Anton Oinko, Conan O’Swine and Sty Young.

“It’s difficult to take all the options we have and narrow it down to a select few,” said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. “There are some very creative Saints fans and they never disappoint with the names they provide. The names are always relevant and always make us laugh.”

During all 18 seasons the Saints have had a pig deliver baseballs to the home plate umpire and each has had a unique name. Many of the names play on hot topics of the year, current events or local celebrities. Past names have included Slumhog Millionaire (2009), Boarack Ohama (2008), Notorious P.I.G. – Piggy Smalls (2003) and Kevin Bacon (2001).

Brat Favre made his first public appearance Wednesday and will make his first Midway Stadium appearance at their home opener on Thursday, May 13 for the Saints 7:05 p.m. game against the Wichita Wingnuts.
