Top Rank head Bob Arum says a big boxing match will be held at the new Yankee Stadium next year, marking the return of the sport to an outdoor venue.
He said this while announcing a fall match in Las Vegas; the press conference was held at the new Yankee Stadium. Arum wasn't shy about hinting at a big match he's working on for next summer.
The original Yankee Stadium was a mecca for pro boxing. Many high-profile heavyweight battles were held at Yankee Stadium, which was outfitted for hosting large crowds. For decades a box was located underneath second base to hold the PA equipment and other boxing accoutrements.
The real question: Are there enough boxing fans out there to warrant a big match at a 50,000-plus-sized venue? Yankee Stadium was a mecca for boxing when a) boxing was more popular than it is today and b) there was no competition from TV or pay-per-view. Boxing used to be an event; not so much so today.
