Oakland A's owner Lew Wolff says any vote on a new ballpark in San Jose would be premature, so any proposal will go before the voters in 2010 at the earliest.
Specifically, Wolff says he wants to wait until a committee appointed by Commissioner Bud Selig to study the future ballpark needs of the A's issues a final report. This report is expected to address the territorial rights to San Jose held by the San Francisco Giants; if it recommends San Jose as the best destination for the A's, the report will give Selig some political cover to work out some sort of deal between the teams. At one point it was thought the report could be issued by the end of the season, but Wolff now says he's not sure that deadline will be met .
Still, if the politics of MLB are successfully navigated, the issue could be put before voters in March 2010.
The city is looking at a 32,000-seat ballpark on a 14-acre site near the Diridon Caltrain station.
