Labatt Park, one of the oldest ballfields still in use, will be honored with a summer-long celebration in London, Ontario.
They’ve been playing baseball at the Labatt Park site since 1877, when the London Tecumsahs set up the diamond for a pro game against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Though the actual location of the diamond has changed over time in response to flooding and other concerns, baseball has been played there annually, with the current ballpark dating back to the 1930s. It’s a historic place; ballpark folks regularly make a pilgrimage.
The city seems to know what a gem it has and is spending money on Labatt Park: the clubhouses were recently renovated. In London, the history of the ballpark will be celebrated with a historic display at City Hall, displaying memorabilia dating back to the turn of the century.
