Salem Red Sox out to great start after Opening Day sellout

The former Salem Avalanche excited a crowd of 5,287 with an extra-inning loss.It looks like the Salem Avalanche made a successful debut as part of Red Sox Nation, with a sellout crowd on hand at Salem Memorial Ballpark to see the Salem Red Sox (High Class A; Caroline League) in action.

And a large part of that sellout crowd: Boston Red Sox fans, making a connection with the Salem team.

Alas, the ending was not happy for the home fans. Trailing 5-0 after five innings and 6-3 headed to the last of the ninth, the Sox took advantage of four Frederick walks and a hit-by-pitch to score three times and tie it up in their last at-bat. With the winning run at third, a Kristopher Negron ground out and Aaron Reza strike out sent the game into the tenth.

After a pair of scoreless extras, Frederick right-fielder Billy Rowell pounded a two RBI single up in the middle in the top of the twelfth, scoring Matt Angle and Ryan Adams.
