The Oakland A’s say they’ll spend $15 million on upgraded spring-training facilities, provided Phoenix pays back the money in coming years.
Owner Lew Wolff says he’d like to see new clubhouses at Phoenix Municipal Stadium and upgraded fields and other facilities at Papago Park, where the team practices. The total cost of the upgrades would be around $15 million.
Phoenix doesn’t have money for any spring-facilities upgrades, which Wolff knows, so he’s proposing a somewhat unique solution: the team will spend the money and the city can set up a repayment schedule down the line. No word on any sort of interest.
The team’s lease at Phoenix Municipal Stadium ends in 2014.
