CBL to potentially absorb five ULB teams for 2009

Baseball fans in Texas and Louisiana may have a glimmer of hope, as United League Baseball and the Continental Baseball League potentially find homes for five ULB franchises. Besides the previously announced Alexandria Aces, the Amarillo Dillas, Edinburg Coyotes, Harlingen WhiteWIngs, Laredo Broncos and San Angelo Colts could play under the Continental Baseball League banner this season.

United Sports Equities, the parent of United League Baseball, is under bankruptcy protection in Florida. The announcement by the league today makes it clear any agreement with the CBL rests on the ability of both league leaders to find local ownership. Earlier today a press release indicated Eric Moran, a former pitcher for the Alexandria Aces, would be part of an ownership group for that team. The same goes for any other markets seeking to keep baseball alive:

Local ownership is being sought for each United Sports team. The viability of local economic involvement is central to determining which teams will play under the Continental banner. Formal team announcements will occur early next month concurrent with printing the Continental League’s 2009 schedule.
