Waukegan moves forward with ballpark study

A divided Waukegan (Ill.) City Council barely approved a study to determine the feasibility of building a new ballpark in the city’s downtown.

By a 5-4 vote, the council agreed to spend $8,500 on a feasibility study. Mark Hauser and Pete Heitman have proposed the city buy land for a privately financed ballpark costing between $18 million and $25 million. And while some in city government have long pushed baseball for the Chicago suburb, others say spending anything on pro sports is a waste of time.

If Waukegan does land professional baseball, it will likely be in the form of indy ball. Charting the territorial waters for Waukegan would be difficult; both MLB Chicago teams would need to sign off, as would the Kane County Cougars (Low Class A; Midwest League).
