Monetizing the cold: how ballparks are used in wintertime

Three teams are taking two different approaches toward monetizing their ballparks in the cold winter months: the Lancaster Barnstormers are once again hosting an ice rink at the ballpark — sponsored, no less — while the Quad Cities River Bandits and American Defenders of New Hampshire are hosting one-day holiday celebrations.

In Pennsylvania, the Lancaster Barnstormers (independent; Atlantic League) have found success with the city’s only outdoor skating rink, set up at Clipper Magazone Stadium, where the team offers unlimited skating, special discounts and the chance to skate with team mascot Cylo. As a bonus, the team has a presenting sponsor for the Ice Park: Lancaster County Motors.

"Having a presenting sponsor really adds legitimacy to what we’re doing here," Barnstormers general manager Vince Bulik said. " shows that members of the business community recognize how popular ice skating is at the ballpark and how committed we are to providing affordable activities for the community all year long.”"

Other teams are holding winter events as well. At Modern Woodmen Park this Saturday the Quad Cities River Bandits (Low Class A; Midwest League) are holding an inaugural Frost Fest, which features special appearances from Mr. and Mrs. Claus, Miss Iowa USA Abbey Curran and Rascal the River Bandit.

"This is a time of year when people can visit with family, friends and neighbors, have fun, and appreciate the many ways we have all been blessed," said team owner Dave Heller. "The River Bandits’ front office is excited about the opportunity to spend a day visiting with guests and welcoming them into our home. It is a special privilege to be able to offer children and grown-ups alike the chance to attend an event – free of charge – with the sole purpose of making them smile."

A similar event is being held this Sunday, where the new owners of the American Defenders of New Hampshire (independent; Can-Am Association) are holding a Winter Fest at Holman Stadium.
