Design deadlines slip on new Saints ballpark

New St. Paul Saints ballpark

A hard deadline of Aug. 23 for design work on a new St. Paul Saints (independent; American Association) ballpark has slipped and isn’t expected to be met for months.

The contract with Ryan Companies called for design work and a firm estimate of the maximum construction cost to be met on Aug. 23. That deadline, according to St. Paul officials, won’t be met for several months. The new ballpark is slated to open in 2015, but the project has gotten off to a rocky start: the Lowertown building site was in much worse shape than anticipated, leading to $8.8 million in new cleanup costs and a delay in site remediation.

Despite the delay in design and cost estimation, officials say 2015 is still a workable opening date: work is being done on the ballpark site now and construction could be put off until next spring and still make a 2015 opening date. In other words, missing an important early deadline by several months shouldn’t affect Opening Day.
