BB&T Point Could Land Pro Soccer Team

BB&T Point

A professional soccer club could join the High Point Rockers (independent; Atlantic League) at BB&T Point, as discussions are underway about placing a USL League One team at the facility.

Built as part of a larger downtown redevelopment initiative, BB&T Point opened for the Rockers last May. While serving primarily as home to a professional baseball team, the facility was also designed to host multiple types of events, including other sports.

The venue’s professional sports offerings could be expanded, should an effort to launch a Division III USL League One team come to fruition. During a city council meeting on Monday, a Forward High Point official stated that there are currently discussions underway about placing a USL League One club at BB&T Point. Those discussions are not final as of now, though the prospective soccer team could join the Rockers at BB&T Point in either 2021 or 2022 if the effort moves forward. More from The High Point Enterprise:

High Point is drawing closer toward a possible deal for a professional soccer team that would play at BB&T Point stadium.

Forward High Point Executive Director Ray Gibbs told the City Council Monday that negotiations are ongoing with USL League One, which is the third division of professional soccer in the U.S.

“It’s basically minor league soccer,” said Gibbs. “We have been working with what we think is an (ownership) investment group. If we can get the application in, we could be looking at the March 2021 season, if not the 2022 season.”

USL League One launched last spring, and is about to begin its second season. Our own Mark Cryan visited BB&T Point after it opened last year, providing a report on the ballpark and its anticipated impact on High Point’s downtown-development project.
