Travis Field, home of the Brazos Valley Bombers (Texas Collegiate League), is the winner of the 2019 Best of the Ballparks summer collegiate fan vote, chosen over Pit Spitters Park, home of the Traverse City Pit Spitters (Northwoods League).
The final vote: 56 percent for Travis Field, 44 percent for Pit Spitters Park. Overall, over 72,500 fans voted in the summer-collegiate competition (compared with just over 56,000 fans voting in 2018), with over 590,000 fans voting in the overall competition.
“It is a true honor to have the support of our community, our players from over the years, and our friends from all-over that believe in the Bombers organization so much,” said Brazos Valley Bombers President Uri Geva. “Their support and continued voting is a testament to the history of our ballpark along with the incredible improvements that have been made to Travis Field over the 13 years of the Brazos Valley Bombers. We love making memories of a lifetime happen at Travis Field throughout the Summer! What an honor to be named the 2019 Summer Collegiate Best Ballpark!”
Opening in 1947, the ballpark hosted minor-league baseball in various leagues: the Lone Star League, East Texas League and the Big State League. It also served as temporary home to Texas A&M baseball in 1972 through 1975.
“Travis Field is emblematic of why fans love summer-collegiate ball: it’s a classic old ballpark with plenty of history,” said Ballpark Digest Publisher Kevin Reichard. “The Bombers offer a great experience at Travis Field, as evidenced by the win in this fan vote.”
