Fans will get an early look at Segra Stadium, as Fayetteville officials are planning a special event at the home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (High A; Carolina League) on April 13.
Currently under construction in downtown Fayetteville, Segra Stadium will open in April as the new home of the Houston Astros-owned Woodpeckers. The Woodpeckers are scheduled to host the Carolina Mudcats for their home opener at the ballpark on Thursday, April 18, but on Tuesday city officials discussed plans for an event that will take place in advance of that game.
Dubbed First Fan Look, the event will take place on April 13. As part of the festivities, the gates of Segra Stadium will open to give fans an early glimpse of the new ballpark. More from The Fayetteville Observer:
At the city’s Baseball Committee meeting on Tuesday, more details were discussed about the planned celebrations at First Fan Look on April 13, a sneak preview of the stadium for the community, as well as opening day on April 18. On that day, the Woodpeckers, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, are scheduled to play the Carolina Mudcats.
Jim Arp, the chairman of the committee, said youth baseball teams will be invited to the First Fan Look event.
“That is opening day for recreation baseball,” he said. “We might structure that where we can have as many of our youth that (are) playing baseball and softball from ages 4 all the way through high school and have them come out in uniform.”
The Woodpeckers will arrive at the new ballpark, which is being positioned as the anchor of a larger downtown redevelopment initiative, after playing the past two seasons as the Buies Creek Astros at Campbell University’s Jim Perry Stadium. A ballpark naming-rights agreement with Segra, an independent fiber bandwidth company, was announced last week.
