The Thunder Bay Border Cats (summer collegiate; Northwoods League) have been sold to Superior Baseball Club, a Florida corporation headed by Kyle Smith that also includes former Border Cats owner John Wendel in the group of five investors.
Smith, who began his professional career in Mankato with a Northwoods League team, is currently General Manager of the Brevard County Manatees (High A; Florida State League). Wendel is a veteran Minor League Baseball operator who was the original owner of the Border Cats.
“Owning the Border Cats over the last eight years has been an absolute privilege. The ball club was much more than just a business for us but a passion. We look forward to assisting the new ownership group through this transition,” said Brad Jorgenson in a league announcement of the sale.
“It has been an absolute joy to work with Brad for so long, experiencing some great moments along the way, highlighted by the Border Cats hosting of the League’s All-Star game. Fergie Jenkins as our guest speaker, and then the cherry on top with the Stanley Cup appearing before a sold-out stadium!” said Northwoods League Chairman Dick Radatz, Jr.
