Jacksonville unveils Bragan Field

Jacksonville SunsThe city of Jacksonville made it official: the playing field at the Baseball Grounds will be known as Bragan Field, with temporary signs at the ballpark unveiled.

The field is named for longtime Jacksonville Suns (Class AA; Southern League) owner Peter Bragan Sr. Bragan, who passed away on July 7 at the age of 89, bought the Suns in 1984 and built the franchise over the years.

Mayor Alvin Brown paid tribute to Bragan during a ceremony at the ballpark:

“This proclamation speaks to a guy who was a long-esteemed community leader who has left a legacy that will live on,” Brown said. “Mr. Bragan was a true friend to our city. He built an outstanding baseball team that won multiple Southern League championships.

“But this goes deeper than baseball. This Jacksonville success story has been just as much about families, friends and fans who filled the stadium and contributed to the energy that defines our city. Mr. Bragan built that energy. He invested in our spirit and gave everyone, from toddlers to old-timers, a reason to cheer and most of all, believe in Jacksonville.”
