We expect to hear details of an extended New York Yankees-Trenton Thunder (Class AA; Eastern League) player-development contract (PDC) when the two teams hold a press conference Thursday.
Of course, no one seriously expected the two sides to break up what has been an enormously successful partnership. A renewal has been regarded by most in MiLB as a formality, but the length is the issue: it’s now through 2014, but could be extended by 10 more years. It’s not one of the longest in baseball — heck, Bluefield and Baltimore were affiliated for 53 years! — but it’s one of the longer ones.
Scheduled to appear at the Thursday press conference: New York Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes as well as Trenton Thunder President Joe Finley and General Manager Will Smith.
Here’s a look at the current affiliate status.
