A long-term development plan for Macomb County in suburban Detroit calls for the development of a minor-league ballpark in Utica.
Macomb County’s Blue Economy Strategic Development Plan lists 49 projects to be undertaken by the county. It’s not as though there’s not been an effort to bring baseball to the region — a group failed to secure financing for a new ballpark for an independent Frontier League team in neighboring Oakland County — but so far success has been elusive.
Of course, a strategic development plan right now represents little more than wishful thinking. Utica is a pretty small community, so it’s a little mystifying why that city was targeted for baseball. Still, the Detroit suburbs represent a pretty good market opportunity for a baseball entrepreneur, either on the Class A level or an indy circuit.
