Rematch of diamond battle of the sexes in Rockford

Rockford RiverhawksIt’s a rematch of a diamond battle of the sexes, as the Rockford RiverHawks (independent; Frontier League) will once again host the Chicago Bandits in an exhibition fastpitch softball game — a sport that perplexed the pro baseball players last year, as the Bandits trounced the ‘Hawks 5-0.

This year’s rematch is scheduled for Tuesday, June 28 at 7:05 p.m. at Road Ranger Stadium.

Last year the Bandits won 5-0. Randall Simon had a pinch-hit single with two outs in the ninth inning for the RiverHawks, ending the Bandits’ bid at a no-hitter.

“We are very excited to play this year,” manager Rich Austin said. “We got whipped last year, so it’s time for revenge.”

Chicago Bandits GM Aaron Moore is also looking forward to the contest.

“We always seem to play well during these “Battle of the Sexes” games,” Moore said. “The Bandits are looking forward to showcasing their skills against an elite team like the RiverHawks.”

It appears as though ringers will be involved.

“We will be signing two men’s fastpitch pitchers to join us that day,” director of operations Chris Daleo said. “They will pitch for us, because we’re playing to win. It is great to see a bridge between baseball and fastpitch. Everyone will be coming to the park for a great night.”
