First seats installed in new Marlins ballpark

New Marlins Ballpark

Big day for David Samson and the Florida Marlins front office at their new ballpark, slated to open next season: the first seat was installed in Section 19, and the team took batting practice, albeit on a dirt surface with no fences.

The new ballpark is slated to open in 2012; the team will spend this season as the Florida Marlins before changing the team name to Miami Marlins to coincide with the big move at SunLife Stadium.

Construction is right on schedule, and the event today — before the team gathered for spring training —  was designed to make some headlines. It worked: the sight of Hanley Ramirez and Logan Morrison batting made for some great pictures.

The first seat — Section 19, Row H, Seat 12 — will certainly stand out: it’s the only red seat in a sea of blue seats.
