The longtime head of the South Atlantic League will be remembered at a new Gardner-Webb University ballpark.
Construction is underway on John Henry Moss Stadium, the future home of the Gardner-Webb University baseball team in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The ballpark originally was slated to be done for this season, but various delays pushed back the start of construction. The Runnin' Bulldogs are playing this entire season on the road.
Moss launched the Western Carolina League in 1947; it was relaunched in 1959, with Moss serving as president of the circuit through 2007. The courtly Moss was one of the most colorful folks in baseball; he kept the Western Carolina League going through those early years with sheer force of will, and he was rewarded when the league blossomed as a renamed South Atlantic League. It was always a pleasure to see Moss at a ballpark; you could expect a story or two with a punch line delivered with a twinkle in his eye.
