Businessman pitches Northwoods League team in Indiana

Elkhart Couny approves a $5 million loan to a businessman seeking to build a $12-million ballpark in Elkhart, Indiana, for a summer-collegiate Northwoods League team.

Elkhart Couny has approved a $5 million loan to a businessman seeking to build a $12-million ballpark in Elkhart, Indiana, for a summer-collegiate Northwoods League team, contingent on the private sector bringing up the rest of the money.

Elkhart is located around 20 miles east of South Bend. The proposed ballpark would be located on Hwy. 20 on the east side of town.

Craig Wallin is the Elkhart businessman seeking to put the ballpark in the middle of a proposed retail development in time for the 2011 season. It also puts the Northwoods League in the midst of summer-collegiate Prospect League territory, though the two leagues have vied in the past for new markets. The advantage for the Northwoods League: Elkhart can be the travel partner to the league's existing Battle Creek franchise.
