The Tulsa Drillers (Class AA; Texas League) have already vacated their longtime home for a new downtown ballpark. The issue for the Tulsa County Public Facilities Authority, which owns the ballpark, is what to do with the facility and the 5.5-acre ballpark site.
The consensus from the Expo Square Drillers Stadium Committee is that the ballpark should remain open and leased until someone steps forward with a development plan for the site.
The recommendation will probably renew talk of the University of Tulsa bringing back baseball as a varsity sport. Several prominent alumni have called for baseball to return; given that Tulsa is in midst of baseball country and most neighboring universities have high-profile college programs, the calls will continue — but they won't be heeded without a little cash as well.
