Legendary Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell has been diagnosed with incurable cancer.
The sunny optimism of Ernie Harwell came through in this Detroit Free Press interview where he shared the details of his incurable cancer of the bile duct. An icon in the baseball world. Harwell was a broadcaster for 55 years — 42 with the Tigers, and shorter stints with the Atlanta Crackers, Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles — and has always shown a robust love for the game.
Most recently Harwell led the fight to save Tiger Stadium, an effort that came up short.
