Lowell reverses course, will seek bids for 10-year lease for LeLacheur Park

The Lowell Arena Commission decided to heed the wishes of Lowell Spinners owner Drew Weber and will look at a 10-year lease for LeLacheur Park. The Lowell Arena Commission decided to heed the wishes of Lowell Spinners (short season; NY-Penn League) owner Drew Weber and will look at a 10-year lease for LeLacheur Park.

The commission had made noise about wanting to see a higher level of baseball played at LeLacheur Park, and then it decided it did not want a long-term lease. Given baseball’s territorial rules, the commssion discovered it needed to play ball with Spinners owner Weber, who said a 10-year lease was the shortest one acceptable to him. Booting the Spinners made little sense, and it sounds like the latest plan will increase the rent paid by the Spinners (a move agreed upon by Weber) and commit the team to the ballpark for a decade.
