The new LSU Tigers ballpark is on schedule for a February 2009 opening; hurricanes and unexpected snow storms have failed to deter progress on the facility.
The new Alex Box Stadium, which will end up costing between $35 million and $37 million, is slated to begin hosting games when the LSU season opens on February 20. The field is almost ready for play now, and the guts of the ballpark — clubhouses, concessions, seating — is almost completed.
“From sitting up in the stands, the field will look almost perfect, but getting on the field and knowing how it plays and the way the ball is going bounce is important to us,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “When you’re getting ready to move into a new environment, you want to have a home-field advantage. And by getting the field ready to play on next month that allows our players to get used to it and see how it plays. That’s a very important step to us.”
