Redevelopment Around Former Turner Field Continues

Georgia State Stadium

An effort to redevelop the area around Atlanta’s former Turner Field continues, with developers breaking ground this week on apartments on a site formerly used for parking.

Home to the Atlanta Braves from 1997-2016, Turner Field was repurposed following the team’s departure to become Georgia State Stadium, accommodating the university’s football program. The conversion project was intended to be part of a larger development initiative, as the university and project partners envisioned that the surrounding area would be redeveloped over time to include new mixed-use amenities and facilitate better connectivity to downtown Atlanta.

That effort took another step forward this week, when developer Carter and partners King & Company and Healey Weatherholtz Properties broke ground on a new 306-unit apartment building. The apartments will be constructed at 565 Hank Aaron Drive, taking over an area north of the facility that was previously used for parking. More from Curbed Atlanta:

That means nearly 1,000 new multifamily residences are in the pipeline or have recently opened in the blocks surrounding the repurposed Major League Baseball stadium and its lots.

Once complete, the five-story complex is expected to feature some 8,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space below a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, as well as six live-work units.

Plus, officials noted, 31 of the one- and two-bedroom residences are expected to be earmarked for households earning 80 percent of the area median income.

The property, just north of the football stadium, is being sited in a way that would allow residents to peer out toward Georgia State University’s planned new baseball park.

Sister site Football Stadium Digest took a closer look at the Georgia State Stadium conversion process, as well as plans for related development, in an August 2018 story. The Braves opened SunTrust Park in suburban Cobb County at the beginning of the 2017 season, with Georgia State arriving at the former Turner Field in time for that fall’s college football slate.
